The SWBF is a charitable trust fund recently set up with the help of the BMC. Our aim is to promote sports climbing in South Wales by raising funds to replace in-situ protection that may be getting dangerously worn or corroded. This applies only to crags designated for 'sports' climbing and not 'traditional' climbing areas.

The bolt fund was set up by a handful of local climbers to address the problem of maintaining the bolts on sports routes, by raising cash specifically to purchase modern bolts rated for climbing. Activists and others can now ask the fund for free bolts to re-equip old, worn or inappropriate in-situ protection on sports routes in South Wales. Routes are generally re-equipped by either the first ascentionist or with their permission (see policy page for more details). Bolts are not availible for development of new routes.

Money is raised via donations, events like film nights and the Gower festival and through topo sales (£3 each). If you enjoy clipping shiny bolts, please support these activities. If you want to be more directly involved send an email and we’ll let you know what’s happening in your area.

Applications from individuals for funds should be made by email and meet the following criteria:

1) It can be demonstrated that funds are to be used for development or re-equipment  of in-situ protection

2) That any in-situ protection is placed in accordance with the current bolt policy.

3) Improvement ot lower off's and routes in the 5a to 6c catagory in particular are to be promoted.
